“What’s a groin vault?”, you may be asking yourself. Despite the unfortunate name, it’s a very special and beautiful type of vaulted ceiling originating way back with the Roman Empire. (I learned that and more at the wikipedia page for Groin Vault)
As interesting as that may be, what we really want to share in this post is the beautiful faux finishing recently completed on one of our projects.

Decorative Finishes Add Interest and Detail
The beautiful work you see in the photo above was masterfully completed by Kelly Gaylord. Kelly is a Punta Gorda faux painter and the artist and owner of Decorative Expressions, Inc.
Kelly is originally from New Jersey where her Mom was an artist. Being raised around art was a natural lead-in to the beautiful and sometimes very large-scale work she does now.
When asked to describe her craft, Kelly had no trouble knowing exactly why she does what she does:
“Decorative and Faux finishes highlight the architecture in a home, enhancing the overall beauty of the space.”
We couldn’t have said it better!
Faux Finishing Works In Any Size
When you think about adding some faux finishing to your remodeling project, you don’t have to think only in terms of large-scale or special elements such as the groin vault.
A decorative finish can add pizzazz to just about any situation. Here are a few more pictures of Kelly’s work on this same job:

The Faux Finish Process
Hopefully we’re not giving away trade secret’s here! These are the steps involved in the groin vault… somewhat simplified!
1. Paint a Base Coat

2. Add Metallic Accent Coat(s)

3. Finish With A Glaze and Add Details

So there you have it, a faux finished groin vault.
You know… Wikipedia says that some people call these Cross Vaults or Double Barrel Vaults… can we cast a vote for one of those names?
